National Day Calendar founder Marlo Anderson is creating an original piece of art for every state in the union — a new design unveiled each week, timed to that state's National Day. Ohio is the third, released for National Ohio Day on November 2.
Each design is laser-etched into a real slab of wood, bark edge and all. The shape, the grain, the knots and the color are whatever the tree decided, so no two pieces are alike. The one that arrives at your door is the only one like it.
About the Ohio design. Marlo built this one around flight: a Wright Flyer, a nod to Dayton's own Wright brothers, soars across the state's silhouette above rolling farmland, where a barn and silo stand beside a covered bridge and a creek winds through the fields. Buckeye leaves and buckeyes, from the state tree, frame both sides with scarlet carnations, the state flower, and a pair of cardinals, the state bird, sit beneath the banner between white trilliums, the state wildflower. "The Buckeye State" runs along the bottom. Marlo's signature is etched into the piece.
Only ten of the Ohio slab will ever exist. When all ten are sold, this design is retired for good.
We make ten of each state. When Ohio sells out we will not make more, and next week a new state takes its place.
Please note: because every slab is cut from a different part of a different tree, the piece you receive will vary in shape, size, color and grain from the one pictured. That is the nature of the material — and the reason yours is one of a kind. We ship within the United States only.
