National Day Calendar founder Marlo Anderson is creating an original piece of art for every state in the union — a new design unveiled each week, timed to that state's National Day. Kentucky is the first, released for National Kentucky Day on October 19.
Each design is laser-etched into a real slab of wood, bark edge and all. The shape, the grain, the knots and the color are whatever the tree decided, so no two pieces are alike. The one that arrives at your door is the only one like it.
About the Kentucky design. Marlo gathered the Bluegrass State into a single frame: a Thoroughbred at full gallop, a farm and fence line rolling back toward the mountains, and the Kentucky River winding through the state's own silhouette. A pair of cardinals — the state bird — sits beneath the banner, goldenrod frames both sides, and the state motto runs along the bottom: United We Stand, Divided We Fall. Marlo's signature is etched into the piece.

Ten, and then it's gone
Only ten of the Kentucky slab will ever exist. The number remaining on this page is the real one — when it reaches zero, this design is retired for good.
We make ten of each state. When Kentucky sells out we will not make more, and next week a new state takes its place.
Please note: because every slab is cut from a different part of a different tree, the piece you receive will vary in shape, size, color and grain from the one pictured. That is the nature of the material — and the reason yours is one of a kind. We ship within the United States only.
